Finally, even in Italy the smoke-proof characteristics of the doors are being regulated and made mandatory.

The D.M. 03.08.2015 introduces a new essential requirement or the performance of control of smoke dispersion: this is a real novelty in the Italian fire prevention legislation that is destined to create a new generation of fire doors. The introduction of this new type of doors will finally meet the demands of industry operators who for years have called for fire prevention measures that include the use of smoke-tight doors.

The sealing of the fumes in the initial stages of the fire in a protected fire compartment is essential to ensure visibility and liveability along the escape routes, an aspect which has often not been given due importance in the past.

Smoke loss S200 – when the maximum dispersion value measured for the test at room temperature and at 200 ° C up to an overpressure of 50 Pa does not exceed 20 m3 / h for a single leaf door, or 30 m3 / h for a 2-leaf door.

The smoke dispersion control test for doors is contained in the UNI EN 1634-3 standard: it is used to determine the ability of an element to reduce or eliminate the passage of smoke from one side to the other of a door with the following levels performance:

  1. Smoke loss Sm – when the maximum dispersion value measured for the test at room temperature and at 200 ° C up to an overpressure of 50 Pa does not exceed 20 m3 / h for a single leaf door, or 30 m3 / h for a 2-leaf door.
  2. Smoke loss Sa – when the maximum dispersion value measured for the test at room temperature at an overpressure of 25 Pa does not exceed 3 m3 / h per meter of clearance between the fixed and moving components of the door (e.g. between the door leaf and door frame), excluding leaks through the threshold.

The test must be performed in authorized laboratories equipped with suitable test equipment.
